During the parliament meeting, it was announced that the sole candidate put forward by the ruling party "Georgian Dream" received 224 electoral votes.
A total of 200 votes were required for victory. One ballot was deemed spoiled.
"News of Georgia" highlights that for the first time in Georgia's history, the president was not elected directly by the people, but by an electoral college controlled by the ruling party.
"For the first time, the President of Georgia does not hold a higher education degree. For the first time, a former football player has become the President of Georgia. For the first time, the new President of Georgia is not recognized as legitimate by three former presidents: the third president Mikheil Saakashvili, the fourth president Giorgi Margvelashvili, and the fifth president Salome Zourabichvili," the publication notes.
