Duda stated that Zelensky was unaware of the details of the Volhynian tragedy prior to becoming president.

Дуда утверждает, что Зеленский не был осведомлён о подробностях Волынской трагедии до своего президентства.

According to Duda, the day before the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the aggressor country Russia, he spoke with Zelensky about the "awareness" of events in Volhynia.

He emphasized that this meeting is different from the discussions regarding exhumation with former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, which yielded no results.

"We will take steps to ensure that this topic ceases to be a source of anger between our peoples, for this deeply wounded memory, or, as they say, for hatred," the politician stated.

Duda stressed that he would not impose an ultimatum on Ukraine, which was attacked by Russia, regarding the events in Volhynia. He added that he would not refuse to help a neighbor whose "house is on fire," even if that neighbor has caused him much harm in the past.

The president noted that "Ukrainians believe they are defending Europe; they are deeply convinced of this and do not think they owe anything for the assistance they received."

One of the "fundamental problems" regarding the exhumation of victims of the events in Volhynia is, according to Duda, that "no one wants to say: 'Yes, my grandfather and my father committed genocide together; we are connected to this nation that killed.'"
