The release noted that Guterres was welcomed at Kazan airport. A photo of the Secretary-General was also published.
In his own social media, Guterres did not announce the visit, and his office did not confirm the trips until yesterday evening. The Kremlin and the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that he would be coming to Kazan. Russia plans for Guterres to meet with the illegitimate president Vladimir Putin on October 24.
On October 21, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry criticized Guterres' intention to visit Russia. The agency reminded that he agreed to travel to the summit in Russia but previously declined to attend the first global peace summit held in Switzerland this summer. "He accepted an invitation to Kazan from the war criminal Putin. This is an incorrect choice that does not contribute to peace. It only harms the reputation of the UN," emphasized Ukrainian diplomats.
The criticism was joined by Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis. "Unacceptable," he wrote, commenting on Guterres' intentions.
