According to him, in the United States, there is a belief that if the UN wants to be relevant in the 21st century, it must prevent and end wars and conflicts.
"President [USA] Donald Trump has made it clear that he wants to put an end to this war. He believes that too many people have died and wants to bring it to a close. Frankly, we did not think it was wise to have anything at the UN that is antagonistic to any party. We are trying to get these guys to the negotiating table. Unfortunately, Ukraine did not agree and insisted on its own resolution," Rubio stated.
The Secretary of State emphasized that the U.S. then approached the UN Security Council with its "compromise resolution," noting that "war is a terrible thing."
"I’m simplifying it now, but the main opinion is this: war is a tragedy, too many people have died, and it needs to be stopped in a way that provides a sustainable solution. This essentially reflects President Trump's vision for this conflict and reminds the UN that its mission is to end wars, not to prolong them," he remarked.
Rubio mentioned that Trump is the "president of peace," who, in his view, would have liked to "end this war yesterday."
"It may take a few days or weeks, but we are starting this process. It might not work, but who can criticize President Trump for wanting to end a war that has cost billions of dollars, taken hundreds of thousands of lives, and caused terrible suffering?" the politician concluded.
