"The Prime Minister is intensifying his efforts to achieve a fair and lasting peace in Ukraine by convening international leaders for a summit in London today," the statement reads.
The meeting of EU leaders will conclude a week of "intense diplomacy" for Starmer, during which he increased defense spending, negotiated with U.S. President Donald Trump regarding security support for the UK and Europe, and held discussions with the White House and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky following a dispute between the American and Ukrainian leaders in Washington.
The discussions will focus on strengthening Ukraine's position now and ensuring future security guarantees.
"The Prime Minister has made it clear that there can be no talks about Ukraine without Ukraine. He reaffirmed this stance warmly welcoming President Zelensky at Downing Street on Saturday evening ahead of the summit," the British government reported.
On Sunday morning, Starmer is expecting Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Later that day, a summit will take place with leaders from Ukraine, France, Germany, Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Canada, Finland, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Romania, Turkey, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and European Council President António Costa.
"Three years after Russia's brutal invasion of Ukraine, we are at a turning point. Today, I once again reaffirm my unwavering support for Ukraine and double my commitments towards ensuring viability, training, and assistance for Ukraine, putting it in the strongest position. In partnership with our allies, we must enhance our preparations for the European element of security guarantees while continuing discussions with the United States. We have the opportunity to unite to ensure a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, guaranteeing their sovereignty and security," Starmer stated.
