The decision was supported by 331 deputies. Now Barnier is required to submit his resignation request to the President of France, Emmanuel Macron.
The motion of no confidence was introduced in parliament on December 2 by the opposition coalition "New People's Front" and the far-right party "National Rally". The reason for this is a conflict surrounding the reform of the social security system, specifically Barnier's decision to approve the proposed government law on the social security budget for 2025 without submitting it to parliament.
One of the opposition representatives, Marine Le Pen (her far-right "National Rally" secured 143 mandates in parliament following the elections in July), stated after the no-confidence vote against Barnier that "the majority of the responsibility for the current situation" lies with Macron, and after Barnier's resignation, the president should also step down.
Media outlets, citing the Élysée Palace, report that Macron intends to address the French people on the evening of December 5.
