"We need to strengthen the European pillar of NATO. I believe this would be a significant contribution to creating more balanced relations at the transatlantic level. As we all know, the United States has [besides Europe] other geopolitical priorities, so we must rebalance the distribution of costs for our security and defense," said Costa.
He noted that a high-level discussion on European security will take place in early February 2025.
"We are organizing a brainstorming day involving leaders of the European Union. I will invite NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to participate in part of this meeting, and for another part, I will invite UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, so that both can contribute to our reflections," promised the President of the European Council.
According to Costa, the EU may also tighten sanctions against the aggressor state, Russia.
"We are trying to close existing loopholes that Russia is exploiting. We aim to be more effective and increase pressure on the Russian economy to diminish their ability to wage war," he explained.
