According to Trudeau, tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum would be "completely unjustified" because Canada is the "closest ally of the U.S. and their economies are integrated."
The Prime Minister promised that his government would work with the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump to convince him of the negative impact these tariffs would have on both America and Canada.
In response to a question about whether he would impose retaliatory tariffs against the U.S., Trudeau expressed hope that this would not happen, but if it does, "the response will, of course, be firm and clear."
The politician also added that he would defend "Canadian workers" and "Canadian industry."
