Statements supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression have been submitted to the WTO every year, but since 2022, when Russia's full-scale invasion began, the United States did not support the statement for the first time, the agency notes.
The U.S. abstained from voting on the draft resolution.
It was supported by 45 WTO members, including Ukraine, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia.
A U.S. representative explained to Reuters that the decision not to support the statement on Ukraine was made in accordance with Washington's position expressed in the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly.
According to the agency, the WTO statement expresses "serious concern" about the consequences of the war led by Russia for Ukraine and global trade. It specifically mentions the supply of agricultural products, fertilizers, and minerals from Ukraine to international markets.
