"Ukraine is now much closer to EU membership than it was a year ago," she stated.
The updated EU enlargement report from October 30 indicates that Ukraine has taken all the necessary steps to initiate membership negotiations with the European Union, which the European Commission pointed out as unmet in its 2022 conclusion. At the same time, EU officials emphasize the need for continued reforms in combating corruption and organized crime. The European Commission also urged Ukrainian authorities to more actively implement legislation regarding national minorities, continue reforms in public administration, and decentralize the energy sector.
"The report states that progress [in Ukraine] has been achieved everywhere, except for one very specific area. There is no regression anywhere," noted Maternova. "This is what makes this report outstanding, as at the same time, you are waging an existential struggle for national sovereignty, territorial integrity, and freedom. And at the same time, you are transforming your country."
According to the EU ambassador, progress "is never linear," but Ukraine's clear determination and resolve to join the European Union, along with the implementation of challenging and sometimes painful reforms, are bringing the country closer to membership.
