Kazakhstan has announced the results of the referendum regarding the construction of a nuclear power plant in the country.

В Казахстане обнародовали итоги референдума по вопросу строительства атомной электростанции в стране.

According to official data, 71.12 percent of voters who participated in the referendum supported the construction of the nuclear power plant.

Election commissions declared just over 130,000 ballots invalid. Previously, media outlets published videos showing ballot stuffing.

A total of 7.8 million people visited the polling stations, resulting in a voter turnout of 63.66 percent (on October 6, the commission reported a turnout of 63.87). The referendum was deemed valid after surpassing the 50% threshold.

The referendum on the construction of the nuclear power plant took place in Kazakhstan, a country with a complicated "nuclear" history – during the arms race, the Soviet Union conducted hundreds of both surface and underground tests in the eastern part of the republic, noted "Radio Azattyk".
