In Transcarpathia, law enforcement officials uncovered a creative scheme for smuggling draft dodgers abroad. According to the State Border Guard Service, the fugitives attempted to board a train heading out of the country while it was in motion.
Border guards reported that the scheme's organizers intended to assist the "client" in boarding the international passenger train "Chop - Zahony." Importantly, the "boarding" was to take place only after the train had passed through border and customs control. These procedures occur not directly at the border line but at a railway station located some distance into Ukrainian territory.
If successful, the client promised the organizers a reward of $10,000: $500 upfront, with the remainder after boarding the train.
The "operation" was conducted during nighttime near the border with Hungary. One member of the criminal group transported the client to a location where the train was slowing down. A second member was in the train carriage: their task was to open the door at the right moment and assist the "client" in jumping inside. However, at this critical moment, all participants were apprehended by operatives from the State Border Guard Service and the National Police.
The organizers of the scheme were arrested and taken to a temporary detention facility in the Transcarpathian region. Some of them resisted arrest.
